O Canada
In English and French With comments by Michael Mitchell "O Canada" was proclaimed Canada¹s national anthem on July 1, 1980, a century after it was first performed in Quebec City on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well-known composer.
O Canada!
Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, We stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada! The French version is quite different from the English. There have been several literal English translations of the anthem, but one of the best is taken from Songs of French Canada: Translated into English by a Montreal writer, William McLennan. It goes like this: O Canada!
About Michael Mitchell Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Michael Mitchell has lived a fascinating life that included a 24-year stint in the Canadian military, from which he retired in the rank of Major. Much of that time was spent as a reserve or full-time member of the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada, perhaps the most famous Scottish regiment in the world. His career was so distinguished that the Governor General of Canada awarded him the Order of Military Merit in the class of Officer. This award merits a ranking one level higher than Member of the Order of Canada. When he wasn't working full-time in the armed forces, Michael pursued a career in banking, sales and marketing, and personnel consulting before pursuing his true calling, in the early 1980's : music.
