My Work is Never Done
Geof Johnson
This song is available on Geof Johnson's Songs For All Seasons. When the Pilgrims first came to America, there were no houses, just lots of trees.
So, they chopped some down with their axes.
I’m gonna chop some trees, oh my.
I’m gonna chop some trees, oh my.
I’m gonna chop some trees, oh my.
My work is never done.
Then they got their saws and sawed the trees to make boards to
build their houses and barns and churches.
I’m gonna saw some boards, oh my.
I’m gonna saw some boards, oh my.
I’m gonna saw some boards, oh my.
My work is never done.
Then they got hammers and nails and hammered the boards to make their buildings. Let’s get some hammers and some nails.
I’m gonna hammer some nails, oh my.
I’m gonna hammer some nails, oh my.
I’m gonna hammer some nails, oh my.
My work is never done.
Then it was time to plant a crop. So they went out in the fields with their
shovels and got the ground ready for planting.
I’m gonna dig with my shovel, oh my.
I’m gonna dig with my shovel, oh my.
I’m gonna dig with my shovel, oh my.
My work is never done.
Then they took seeds and went out in the fields and planted them so that
they could grow a crop and have food in the fall.
I’m gonna plant my seeds, oh my.
I’m gonna plant my seeds, oh my.
I’m gonna plant my seeds, oh my.
My work is never done.
Then the seeds grew into tall grain. When it was time to harvest it, they cut it,
and they worked together.
I’m gonna cut my grain, oh my.
I’m gonna cut my grain, oh my.
I’m gonna cut my grain, oh my.
My work is never done.
Then it was time to thresh the grain.
That’s where they whack it on the ground to knock the seeds off the stalk.
I’m gonna thresh my grain, oh my.
I’m gonna thresh my grain, oh my.
I’m gonna thresh my grain, oh my.
My work is never done.
Then they ground the grain to make flour and they baked it into yummy bread,
and everybody ate some.
I’m gonna eat my bread, oh my.
I’m gonna eat my bread, oh my.
I’m gonna eat my bread, oh my.
My work is finally done
