The caterpillar song which follows is a perfect example of how a song can teach an entire (science) lesson. First, talk about caterpillars and their transformation into butterflies. Go outside and see if you can find some caterpillars or butterflies, bring a butterfly garden into your classroom, look at pictures of the metamorphosis, make butterflies out of tissue paper and clothes pins, draw pictures of butterflies. All of these hands-on, very visual and participatory activities can make this a learning experience children will never forget.
Of course, as we sing this song, we are pretending to be caterpillars and butterflies crawling on the ground, curling up into a cocoon, growing wings and standing up to flap our wings and "fly".
Caterpillar so fuzzy
Caterpillar so fuzzy
Caterpillar so fuzzy
Crawling on the ground.
Caterpillar crawling all around
Caterpillar crawling all around
Caterpillar crawling all around
Eating grass and leaves.
Caterpillar makes a cocoon
Caterpillar makes a cocoon
Caterpillar makes a cocoon
Then she goes to sleep.
Snore... .snore.. ..snore.....
Caterpillar grows some wings
Caterpillar grows some wings
Caterpillar grows some wings
Now she's a butterfly.
Butterflies flying all around
Butterflies flying all around
Butterflies flying all around
Touch down on the ground.
