Martin Luther King
Actions and Photos from Hugh Hanley

  Listen to this song.

This chant, with actions and photographs, is from Hugh Hanley's Circle of Songs.

See The Grand Old Duke of York, on the same CD track as this song.

Stand. March in place to the beat.
The downbeat is in bold print.

Oh... Martin Luther King
And ten thousand women and men,

Stop marching.

They marched to the top of Capitol Hill,
Wiggle your fingers and "march" them as high as you can.

And they marched back down again.
Wiggle your fingers as you "march" them down. .

And when they were up, they were up,

And when they were down, they were down,
And when they were only half-way up,
Hold your arms at waist level. Cross and uncross them.
They were neither up
nor down.

This chant, with actions and photographs, is from Hugh Hanley's Circle of Songs.

Hugh Hanley's Circle of Songs CD/Songbook sets were developed to promote adult/child interactive singing either in pairs or small groups. Children also enjoy singing these songs by themselves. Each set contains songs and activities that are appropriate and great fun for children ages two to seven years and for adults who would like to sing with them. The songs and activities are presented slowly and simply on the recording to help participants learn the songs and to invite participation.
Early childhood educators know that the music that speaks to the heart of the young child is presented slowly and simply. Their favorite songs are the ones that they can join in on and make their own; songs that are so simple and so much fun that even a grown-up can sing them.

Many thanks to Hugh Hanley for permission to display his fingerplay lyrics, actions, and photographs.
