In 1911, an election was fought Should there be Free Trade with the U.S. or not?
The Liberals lost. Laurier stepped down.
Sir Robert Borden took over the crown.
He guided Canada through challenging times
During the Great War, Borden did shine
He rallied the people from east coast to west
To support the war effort, the troops had to be the best.
Chorus:
"Canada First,"
Was his rallying cry.
Protecting her interests
'Til victory was nigh.
His dedication,
And personal beliefs
Helped win the war,
Helped win the peace.
To effectively govern, a coalition was formed
But on the home front, Canadians were torn
Over Conscription. No troops could be found
To strengthen our armies, to be victory bound.
Borden insisted that Canadians command
Their soldiers fighting in the trenches of France.
To help pay for the war, the Income Tax Act was passed
And voting rights extended to women, at last.
Chorus:
"Canada First,"
Was his rallying cry.
Protecting her interests
'Til victory was nigh.
His dedication,
And personal beliefs
Helped win the war,
Helped win the peace.
Canadians won battles, Vimy Ridge for one.
Soon for the Allies, victory would come.
At the peace conference, Borden continued to lead
Helped form the League of Nations, a victory indeed.
By 1920, he gave so much of himself
He was forced to resign, for reasons of health.
His courageous leadership came to an end
A shining example for all to commend.
Chorus:
"Canada First,"
Was his rallying cry.
Protecting her interests
'Til victory was nigh.
His dedication,
And personal beliefs
Helped win the war.
Helped win the peace.
