Jingle in My Pocket
Sharon MacDonald
This song is available on Sharon MacDonald's Jingle in My Pocket. See Sharon's lesson ideas, below.
Five pennies make a nickel
Activities: 1. Purchase a clear-plastic piggy bank (or use a clear jar with a slit cut in the lid). Put a penny in the piggy bank each day. After five days you will have five pennies; take them out and put in a nickel. Each day, add one more penny. When you have five, take them out and put in another nickel. Then take out the two nickels, put in a dime. The next day add a penny. Add a penny each day until you have five pennies; substitute another nickel. When you have two dimes and five pennies, take out the pennies and replace them with a nickel. Take out all of the coins and put in a quarter. The next day add a penny. Keep this going until you have accumulated $1. The activity can be continued throughout the school year. 2. Have each child select from the poem a coin they would like to be. To help them remember which coin they chose, give them a paper coin. When you sing the song have the children stand up depending on which coin they have chosen to be. This helps encourage coin recognition.
