Harriet Tubman
Song For Teaching American History - Lyrics and Sound Clip
Kathleen Wiley

This song is available on Kathleen Wiley's The American Dream

Lyrics:

Harriet Tubman was a good woman...
Harriet Tubman was a Moses among men
In courage and strength... she stands alone
With 19 trips she made to bring 300 home....

The year was 1849 and Harriet’s life was on the line. She’s escaping....
to Pennsylvania...
Where freedom is a premium that slaves are willing to pay with their lives...
Commitment would sustain them...
They’d travel on the Underground Railroad where there was always found
The hope that freedom’s just across that next state line.....

Harriet Tubman was a good woman.
Harriet Tubman was a Moses among men
In courage and strength... she stands alone
With 19 trips she made to bring 300 home....

When Harriet was a little girl, she came into a scary world of hard knocks...
Yet here’s where she began...
The struggle to survive ’cause someone else controlled her life ...
She’d say " Yes Suh, " and then she’d say "Yes Ma’m"
But she believed that freedom was her right and if she couldn’t have it
Why, she’d take her death as second choice to none...

In dark of night she would appear....
The slaves would say "Shhhhh...Moses is here...."
And they’d follow....where she would quietly lead...
The next day when the sun came up...the slaves were gone....
and quite a ruckus would follow...
But it was a done-deed...
And once a slave made up his mind, his life and hers were intertwined
She never lost a person committed to her care.

Harriet Tubman was a good woman.
Harriet Tubman was a Moses among men
In courage and strength... she stands alone
With 19 trips she made to bring 300 home....

The War Between the States began and Harriet was recruited then by the North
To serve as spy and scout....
She used the skills attained as a conductor on the train of the Underground Railroad...
And here’s what she’s about....

She led a major raid the purpose of which was to rescue slaves
And destroy supplies that could be used to support the war...
In hospitals she made the rounds in tending soldiers where she found them
She never........ caught their diseases...
She nursed the sick and dying using herbs and roots while trying to left their spirits
And do for them what pleases...

She knew the art of nursing so that when things looked their worst
She could then pull from her bag of tricks the things that she had learned...
So Harriet would tell us today to not give all our rights away
They’re too precious.........and they are too hard-won...

She’d say "Acquaint yourselves with all the candidates and their platforms
Make decisions.................and then when you’re all done....
Support your country, give your best...because this life is just a test....
And you want to know you helped your country’s freedoms to grow..

Harriet Tubman was a good woman.
Harriet Tubman was a Moses among men
In courage and strength... she stands alone
So let us not forget what this good woman has done....
