Three Syllable Song
Song Lyrics and Sound Clip
Alan Riva and Karin Howard, MA/CCC - Speech Therapist

This song is available on Alan Riva and Karin Howard's
"Exploring Language Through Song and Play"

This song was developed with many theories behind it to enhance articulation. The two main reasons are 1) to practice for production of multi-syllable words and 2) to practice repetitive rapid alternating movement of the articulators. Both of these areas are very important for intelligible speech patterns. A technical term for the second reason is diaidococanisis (repetitive rapid alternating movements of the articulators {tongues & lips} and if you can say that three times fast, then you're doing pretty good).

The suggested activity is very simple. Just play the song and after the child hears the song a few times encourage them to sing along. With most of the children with whom I have tested this song, they started to sing it spontaneously without any direct encouragement. Just by singing along they are practicing production of multi-syllabic words and repetitive rapid alternating movements. It is a nice touch if you have pictures that represent the four multi-syllable practice words in the song. To take this practice to a little more challenging level after the song is over, show the child the pictures one at a time and have them say the word five or six times as fast as they can. If it is difficult for them, model the repetitive production, slow down a little and have them try it again. Keep it fun and just make a little game out of it.
