I Raise My Hand
Jim Rule

This song is available on Jim Rule's Too Much Fun All In One!

Sheet Music is available for this song. Click Here for Sheet Music Information.

With apologies to Yo-Yo Ma and any girl named "Mimi" which is a beautiful name. I am referring to children who shout out when they want to volunteer or are done with their work. This a free style dance. When the music stops, they freeze with one hand in the air, mouths closed, eyes on you, until the music starts again. When the song stops, they will be ready to follow your next instruction.
By the way, the phrase - YO YA - is short for "Yo ya acabé." which means "I already finished." Do you have any students who are always done first and announce it loudly and repeatedly? Well, that was my inspiration. -- Jim Rule

In school I raise my hand now
In school I raise my hand now
Because my name isn’t “yo yo” or “me me”.

I’m not a “yo yo’” or “me me”
I’m not a “yo yo’” or “me me”
I never shout
When I finish my work now
When I finish my work now I raise my hand.

My teacher asks for a helper. I never shout....
Because I know.
Here’s how I go:

(FREEZE with one hand in the air, mouths closed, eyes on you, until the music starts again.)

YO YA YO YA!...

In school I raise my hand now...

I’m not a “yo yo’” or “me me”...

YO YA YO YA!....

We can’t talk at the same time...

The following Bilingual Spanish-English lyrics can be sung to the bonus instrumental track on
Too Much Fun All In One!

Yo no me llamo “YO YA...”

Tengo la mano arriba...

Yo acabé mi trabajo. ...

Yo hago así....

(FREEZE with one hand in the air, mouths closed, eyes on you, until the music starts again.)

Yo quiero ser ayudante....

Yo levanto la mano...

Por qué lo sé....
Yo hago así....

(FREEZE with one hand in the air, mouths closed, eyes on you, until the music starts again.)

¡YO YA YO YA!

Nadie puede escuchar....

Nadie puede estudiar....

Así podemos hablar,

Y les voy a enseñar....
