Rocks: Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic
Jim Thompson

  Listen to this song.

This song available on Jim Thompson's Science Rocks.

Also available on Jim Thompson's "Groove."

There are three types of rocks that make up the crust.
Magma underneath provides the thrust.
Driven by the heat of the core.

Igneous made from magma
Metamorphic made from pressure and heat
Sedimentary from deposition
And with these three, the list is complete

Igneous rocks from magma down below
Cools quickly at the surface down below rather slow
There’s granite and basalt that line the ocean floor
And pumice that floats from the air trapped in it’s pores.

Deep in earth’s crust there’s pressure and heat
Changing mineral composition is quite a feat
This metamorphic rock forms way out of sight
Can be gneiss, quartz, slate or muscovite.

Sedimentary rocks are formed on the crust
From layers of ash, bones, silt and dust
Siltstone, sandstone, chalk and shale
These fossils in these rocks have tales to tell.

There are 3 types of rocks that make up the crust.
Magma underneath provides the thrust.

Driven by the heat of the core.
Igneous made from magma
Metamorphic made from pressure and heat
Sedimentary from deposition
And with these three, the list is complete
