We were on vacation, driving in our car.
We had only started, we hadn't gone too far.
Johnny started whining, and all the kids joined in —
You could hear us miles around 'cause we made such a din.
"When are we gonna get there?
When are we gonna get there?
Mommy, Daddy, when are we gonna
get there, get there, get there?"
Mommy knew the way but she was sleeping in the back.
Daddy had directions, but he got way off track.
He refused to ask for help so we went round and round —
"I can find it by myself, so stop that awful sound."
We finally found the highway that we were looking for.
Millie said she heard a funny sound outside her door.
The car started bumping and rattling along —
While Mom and Daddy changed the tire we helped them with this song.
The sodas had gone stale and the cookies were just crumbs
We'd run out of games to play and everyone was glum.
The road stretched out before us, forever more it seemed —
We just kept on singing till the windows got all steamed.
Finally... there was the hotel, at midnight, or was it one?
Fred said in his nastiest voice, "Are we having fun?"
The clerk at registration looked cheerful as she said —
"I'm sorry folks, your forms got lost, we've not a single bed."
We pulled into a campground, nearly half past three.
It looked a bit unusual, but we could barely see.
We lay down in our sleeping bags and at the break of day —
We heard a roar, an airport runway fifty yards away!
Vacation finally ended, and now we're heading home.
We actually had some good times, but that's another poem.
We learned something real useful, we'll pass it right along —
No matter what goes wrong with things just put 'em in a song.
