I was down on Grandma's farm, just the other day.
The farm is so nice, I asked if I could stay.
But my Grandma said, "Son, you gotta earn your keep.
You gotta count them chicken eggs. Farm labor don't come cheap."
Chorus:
'Cause each chicken lays an egg a day, 7 days a week.
Each chicken lays an egg a day which we collect to keep.
So count each chicken, and multiply by seven.
You'll dream of counting chicken eggs.
You'll dream of Egg-Shell Heaven.
"Grandma, that's just fine," I said. "I'm great at countin' eggs.
And as far as multiplying goes, I do it every day."
She said "OK, my grandson, just to show you're able.
Let's hear you recite loud and clear, the seven times table."
Chorus
"One chicken, 7 eggs," I said, " 'Cause 1 x 7 days.
7 eggs x 2 would be 14, you'd have to put away.
7 eggs from 3 hens - 21, that is a lot to eat."
"No problem," Grandma said to me. "We'll sell them on the street."
"4 chickens would lay 28 - that's 7 days x 4.
And 7 5's are 35. That's just a little more.
7 6's - 42, you'd get from 6 laying hens.
We'd have enough to eat and sell, with some still left for friends."
Chorus
"7 hens for 7 days, would lay us 49.
With more hens in this chicken coop - my job could be full-time.
7 eggs x 8 laying hens, would give us 56.
I guess countin' eggs is easier, than countin' baby chicks."
"7 eggs x 9 laying hens, would leave us 63.
It's true farm labour isn't cheap, but I can think for free.
7 eggs x 10 is 70 - you'd have within a week."
"Son, in you I've found a genius," Grandma began to speak.
Chorus
"7 eggs - 11 hens, gives us 77.
Grandma let me stay here. Farm life seems like heaven.
Oh by the way, I've got to recite one more.
7 eggs from 12 good hens, would leave you 84."
Chorus
