Lewis and Clark
Song For Teaching American History - Lyrics and Sound Clip
Kathleen Wiley

This song is available on Kathleen Wiley's The American Dream

Lyrics:

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
2 men who traveled the West...
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
Of friends they were the best...
Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson
To find the Pacific shore...
With Sacajawea
A woman to lead them...
Adventure was in store...

On July 4th, 1803
Land that was a mystery
Was bought for America...
Louisiana Territory
Became the Corps of Discovery
For Lewis and Clark.

As Meriwether Lewis,
The personal secretary
Of President Thomas Jefferson
Began his 2 year trek

May 1804
He played his part
In how the West was won...

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
2 men who traveled the West...
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
Of friends they were the best...
Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson
To find the Pacific shore...
With Sacajawea
A woman to lead them...
Adventure was in store...

When Meriwether Lewis
Asked William Clark to join him
On his great expedition west...
They knew that with each other
The land they would discover
Would really put them to the test...
Yes, stomach trouble, frostbite, infections, gunshot wounds,
And mosquitoes, hunger, boils and bears....
And rain for 94 of 106 days were just a few of this exploration’s cares....

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
2 men who traveled the West...
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
Of friends they were the best...
Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson
To find the Pacific shore...
With Sacajawea
A woman to lead them...
Adventure was in store...

Shoshone chieftain, Sacajawea’s brother, Cameahwait...
Gave horses for the trip...
So through the Rocky Mountains they went up streams and rivers
To find a water route to the West....
They catalogued and classified animals and plants
never seen before by white men’s eyes...
Recorded manners, languages and traditions of 40 American Indian tribes....

Sadly, the Corps of Discovery discovered
There was no easy water route to the West...
Their venture not a failure as following later
Came trappers, traders and mountain men..
They were the first US citizens to cross the continent
First to see the Rocky Mountains
The first to reach the Pacific Ocean by land
Spurring the Westward Expansion Movement on.
So as they travel through history, the 2 and Sacajawea and her family
Encourage us to follow our own hearts and do our part to be all that we can be....

Chorus:
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
2 men who traveled the West...
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
Of friends they were the best...
Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson
To find the Pacific shore...
With Sacajawea
A woman to lead them...
Adventure was in store...
