CATEGORY 2: SOCIAL LANGUAGE
Social language (technically speaking, 'pragmatic language') is the way
your child uses their language to interact with others. Examples of
Social Language include:
* When a child understands that their parent is not happy by the
parents’ body language or facial expression.
* The ability to take turns during a verbal conversation or a play
activity.
* The use of eye contact either before, during, after or absent of
verbal communication to gain the attention of their communication
partner. In other words, social language is the non-verbal form of
communication that ties all of our language skills together to make us
social communicators.
EYE TO EYE ACTIVITIES
This activity is a lot of fun. All you have to do is look at each others’
eyes throughout out the song. My 2 1/2 year old likes to point to his
eyes and then mine during the chorus. My 5 year old likes to have a
staring contest. The point being that whenever possible try to achieve
eye contact with your child during communication attempts, even as
early as one day old, the more you model this skill for them the easier it
will be for them to use this skill throughout their lives. I am often
reminded of this by my 5 year old when I am trying to talk to the
children in the other room while I am cooking a meal in the kitchen. She
says, "Mom, you’re not using eye contact". What can I say? Nobody's
perfect, just use as much eye contact as possible.
