Pp
Greg Whitfield

Listen to this song.

This song is available on Greg Whitfield's AlphaSongs.

This is one of my favorite letters to teach. In the song for letter P we meet Penelope van Pickle, who is so enamored with the sound of letter P that she begins every word with that sound. It's hard not to laugh at the way she talks, and it's even more fun to talk like Penelope. Try this with your child -- it's p-fun! P-try not to p-giggle, bet you p-can't!
With my kindergarteners, I usually bring various foods that begin with P, and we try to concoct horrible combinations like Penelope's parents do in the song. We've made pickle pudding, spread peanut butter on pretzels, poured paprika into punch, put pepper on peaches. Not as tasty as those marshmallow muffins (we've actually never been brave enough to taste any of these creations), but the gross-out aspect of this experience can be pretty entertaining. -- Greg Whitfield

Penelope Van Pickle,
She just loved the letter P
She couldn't get the sound out of her head
And she thought it might sound better
If she put her favorite letter
At the start of every single word she said

So she called her mother p-Mommy
And she called her father p-Dad
She p-laughed when she was p-happy
And she p-cried when she was p-sad
Her p-teacher tried to tell her
Not to p-talk that way at school
But Penelope loved the letter P
She thought it sounded cool

Well, her Mom and Dad were worried
'Bout the way that she was talking
With a P in front of
Every word she said
So at dinnertime they called her
She came running down the hall and
They both looked at her and
This is what they said:

From now on we're only eating food
That starts with letter P
Tonight we're having porridge
Made with Provalone cheese
And a peanut butter pizza
With a pickle on the side
And prune and pepper pudding
And a pepperoni pie

Well, Penelope turned purple
When she heard her parents' words
"I don't p-think
I'm very p-hungry now," she said
And her Mom and Dad were sure
That they had finally found the cure
But at breakfast time
She walked right in and said

I'm p-starving, what's for p-breakfast
Can I p-have a piece of pie
I can't p-wait to taste that porridge
Did you p-eat it all last night
Put some pudding in my p-lunchbox
And some pears and peanuts, please
You know I'm bound to love it
If it starts with letter P
I'm Penelope Van Pickle
And I love the letter P
