This song is available on Joan Maute's Diggin' Dinosaurs.

Diggin' in the dirt on a sunny afternoon
Usin' all my fingers and a knife and fork and spoon.
Takin' my time, no need to go fast
When I found a fossil, a clue to the past.
First I didn't know just what it could be
Where or when it came from was a puzzle to me.
It looked like a leaf, no more like a bug
Didn't know what it was but I was glad that I dug.
So I showed it to my mom and I showed it to my dad
I showed it to my teacher and I really was glad.
We studied it with all our might
We found out it was a trilobite.
Trilobites are just one kind of fossil I learned
They can help geologists understand the earth.
Some fossils tell a story of what went before
Where they're found can help you understand more.
Did you ever think you'd find a shell on a mountain top?
Or tropical plants where it's never really hot.
How 'bout a giant footprint as big as it can be?
Or petrified wood from a million year old tree?
I'm goin' out diggin' goin' back out soon
I'm takin' all my fingers and my knife and fork and spoon.
I may find a fossil or maybe not
But either way I'll learn a lot.
Diggin' in the dirt on a sunny afternoon...
