Solar System...has nine [eight] planets!
Solar System...asteroids and comets too!
Solar System...satellites keep passing through
and our solar system has the sun and the moon!
We orbit 'round the sun in predictable paths;
gravitational theory.
We understand the laws of planetary motion
thanks to Galileo, Kepler, Brahe, and Isaac Newton.
Solar System...has nine planets!
Solar System...asteroids and comets too!
Solar System...satellites keep passing through
and our solar system has the sun and the moon!
Central to our solar system there is the sun,
an average star.
It is the largest body in our solar system
and from earth it is very far,
150,000,000 kilometers!
Solar System...has nine planets!
Solar System...asteroids and comets too!
Solar System...satellites keep passing through
and our solar system has the sun and the moon!
The sun is so hot that no matter can survive
as a liquid or solid.
The atoms and molecules are all in the form of gas,
mostly hydrogen and helium!
Solar System...has nine planets!
Solar System...asteroids and comets too!
Solar System...satellites keep passing through
and our solar system has the sun and the moon!
Update from Kenny Hood:
"When utilizing track number 16, “Solar System”, on Science Songs 5, please inform your students of the recent solar system update.
Science, in all of its beauty, is an ever-changing field that is constantly redefined. Prior to August of 2006 the space science community, including the International Astronomical Union generally agreed that there were nine planets in our solar system. Since that date, the IAU confirmed eight planets according to the following, newly-released definition of a planet:
A planet must orbit the sun; it must not be a satellite; it must be massive enough for its own gravity to keep it round, and also big enough to dominate its orbit.
Instructional Tip from Musically Aligned:
Help solidify your students’ long-term memory of this change by modeling how to cross off ‘Nine’ and write ‘Eight’ in its place on the lyric sheet.
In addition, while singing the song, emphasize the update vocally for a powerful connection.
