Songs and StoriesThat Celebrate Global Light

During the early 400’s Scandanavian people celebrated the coming of light in a 12-day festival called “Jol.” (pronounced “Yul”). They cut down large trees and built huge fires. Stories say that the bigger logs would create more sparks, bringing them larger families, more animals in their flocks and better crops. This is a song about a Jol or Yule Log!
The fields are white and frozen
All the trees are bare
Yet hiding in the snow
Are crops to grow and share!
So dance around the firelight
And on this darkest night
Count the sparks as they fly by...
The Yule Log’s burning bright!
And THE SUN WILL RISE.
THE SUN WILL RISE.
THE SUN WILL RISE AGAIN.
And THE SUN WILL RISE.
THE SUN WILL RISE
And THE SUN WILL RISE AGAIN.
The nights are black and longer
The days are colder still
But spring will bring the warmth back
And flowers on the hill
So dance around the firelight
And on this darkest night
Count the sparks as they fly by...
The Yule Log’s burning bright!
