In the changing of the landscape, a most important thing
Is how the rocks are broken down; we call it weathering
There are two kinds of weathering: one is physical
Decomposition is the other, known as chemical
And four things that affect the rate of all weathering
Composition of the rock; the climate (temperature and rain);
And topography’s exposure to the wind and rain and sun
But vegetation may provide the rocks some protection
There are four kinds of weathering we say are physical:
Disintegration happens, and it is mechanical:
Exfoliation is the flaking off of rocks in sheets
When rock expands resulting in surface cracks and joints
Another is frost action: freezing water expands cracks
And from growing plants the prying roots do slow, destructive acts
And finally there’s abrasion from physical contact
When edges sharp are rounded, by both grinding and impact
Now to all those kinds of weathering with chemical compare
Which decomposes rock by oxidation from the air;
Or hydrolysis from water; or by acid from the rain;
Or from the lichen growing; or from plants decayin’
