Hh
Greg Whitfield

 Listen to this song.

This song is available on AlphaSongs
.

The sound of letter H is easy to say when you're out of breath. In this particular AlphaSong, the character misses the bus to school, arrives in the classroom out of breath, and is rewarded for teaching the class the sound of letter H. Try running in place for a minute, then listen for the /h/ sound. This sound is all air (no voice), and can be felt by holding your hand in front of your mouth. Try saying the /h/ sound without exhaling (it's impossible). Using a hand mirror, say some words with the /h/ sound, and watch the mirror fog. This is one of the few letter sounds you can SEE!

I had quite a bit of trouble
With the sound of letter H
Its name would make me think
That it said /ch/ or maybe /a/
So I was looking forward
To the lesson that day
I was finally going to learn to make
The sound of letter H

But my mom forgot to wake me
I got up a little late
And I missed the bus to school
I had to run the whole way
Well, I didn't want to miss a thing
The teacher had to say
I was scared that I would never learn
The sound of letter H

They were sitting on the rug
When I came bursting through the door
They were sitting in a circle
By the teacher on the floor
I had run so hard and fast
That I could barely catch my breath
And you never will believe
Just what the teacher shouted next

She pointed my direction
And she said, "Hey, that's the sound
That the letter H makes"
And everybody turned around
And they listened as I stood there
And I huffed and puffed and wheezed
And then they all started
Huffin' along with me

/h/ /h/ /h/ /h/ /h/ /h/ /h/ /h/
/h/ /h/ /h/ /h/ /h/ /h/ /h/

Well, the teacher put a star
Up on the board beside my name
'Cause she said that I had taught the class
The sound of letter H
When you're out of breath from running
It gets easier to say
When you're huffin' and a-puffin'
That's the sound of letter H
