Vv
Greg Whitfield

This song is available on Greg Whitfield's AlphaSongs.

Try making the sound of letter F (Remember? Put your bottom lip on your front top teeth and blow). Now try the same sound while humming. Voila! The sound of letter V! Kids get a charge out of this connection, and it's a great way to help them remember the /v/ sound.
Here's a partial list of the 'V' words my students came up with (keep in mind these are kindergarteners!): vitamin, volcano, vacuum cleaner, vegetable, vase, vein (we had been studying body parts), vomit, voice, vanilla, velveteen (rabbit), van, vanilla, vegetarian (this one surprised me...when I asked this little girl what it meant, she said it was a doctor that took care of sick animals. Oh well... close!), vampire, very, vent, vest, video (I was surprised this was not at the top of the list), violin, vehicle (we had completed a unit on transportation), and violet (turns out this is what the Crayola company calls purple). Pretty impressive, but the bottom line is that the kids realized that V was not so obscure after all, and they can ALL identify the sound. Brainstorm your own list...you might get some surprises of your own.

Victor loved Eva,
It was easy to see
And he said that he loved her
'Cause her name had a V
So he bought her a valentine,
The red velvet kind
But then something happened
That changed Victor's mind

A new girl named Vickie
Had moved in next door
And he knew he loved Vickie
Just a little bit more
'Cause Vickie's name started
With V just like his
And her last name was Vincent,
So here's what he did

He scratched out the "Eva"
On the valentine heart
And he wrote Vickie's
First and last names on the card
But he did not deliver
The present in time
'Cause another thing happened
That changed Victor's mind

A new girl named
Vivian Valerie Vaughn
Moved in and his love
For young Vickie was gone
'Cause the new girl had V's
In all three of her names
So once again
Victor's red valentine changed

He marked through "Vickie Vincent"
On the front of the card
And he tried to write
"Vivian Valerie Vaughn"
But he ran out of room
And his marker ran dry
So victor sat down and
He started to cry

And without really thinking
As he sat there and cried
He opened the box
With the chocolate inside
And before Victor knew it
All the candy was gone
And as for young
Vivian Valerie Vaughn
She fell for a guy
Named Maxwell McGee
'Cause Vivian, it turns out,
Despised the letter V
