Sailing Along
Song Lyrics and Sound Clip
Fred Gee

This song is available on Fred Gee's The World of Reading
.

Written by Fred Gee with Mrs. Eisenman’s 1991/92 Grade 3 Class
Watson-Williams School, Utica, NY

One night I was sitting on my bed
Reading books of faraway lands
And suddenly to my surprise
Something happened that I don’t understand
My bed became a sailing boat
Surrounded by the ocean so blue
And although I had never been a sailor before
I knew exactly what to do.

CHORUS:
Sailing along on the endless seas
With dreams of adventures and mysteries
Sailing along on the endless seas
Feeling so happy and free, feeling so happy and free.

Just two days before I planned to reach Cape Horn
The fog was so thick I got lost
Such a cold winter morning on the first of July
That the rigging was all covered with frost
Suddenly there was a thunderous splash
What appeared was a giant sperm whale
He pulled me ‘round the tip of South America
With a towline wrapped around his tail.

CHORUS

It was a sunny morning near Sicily
I decided to cool off from the heat
So I dove in the water and swam all around
Until something started nudging my feet
I grabbed the reins and held on tight
Rode that sea horse a very long way
It took me to Naples and then back again
Before the end of the day.

CHORUS

One day near Australia on the Barrier Reef
Where the coral is colored so bright
I put on my googles and pulled on my fins
And snorkeled in the brilliant sun light
I was shocked to hear an angelfish choir
Singing songs that I’d heard before
But when they saw me they just swam away,
I never heard them sing anymore.

CHORUS

The coldest place on earth that I’ve ever sailed
Was along the Larsen Ice Shelf
With the bitter winds and the blizzard snows
It’s amazing that I’m still in good health
It’s certainly a credit to the nice penguins there
Who were kind enough to carry me home
They put me gently down into my nice warm bed
Then walked away and left me alone.

CHORUS
