Multiplying Decimals
Teaching the Operations with Decimal Numbers
Jim Thompson

  Listen to this song.

This song is available on Jim Thompson's "Work It!"

When teaching my students to multiply decimals, I always instruct them to first round the numbers, then quickly multiply those multiples of 10 to get an idea of whether or not their final answer is reasonable. Then they will know if they need to “Either re-work or go with it."
                                                                                                       -- Jim Thompson

To either rework or go with it.
To either rework or go with it.
To either rework or go with it.
To either rework or go with it.

If one of my factors has a decimal,
I’ll ignore it until I am through
Yes, I will save it for the product,
Count left from the right
To give my product proper place value

But first I really want to round
(To see)
If my actual makes sense
Then compare the two
To see what I should do.

To either rework or go with it.
To either rework or go with it.
To either rework or go with it.
To either rework or go with it….
