Here is an inexpensive way to make a little book for the letter N:
Fold two sheets of plain white paper (8.5x11) in half, top to bottom, hamburger style. (Side to side yeilds a skinny result, known as hot dog style).
Fold again in half, staple near this new fold, and trim the original fold to separate the top edges. Now you have a book with eight blank pages. Print the letter N on the front cover, and inside write the following words, one per page:
- neck
- nose
- nut
- nap
- nine
- nest
- number
Search through magazines or newspapers to find pictures to go with each word, and glue them onto the corresponding page. (Be careful not to use too much glue so the pages don't stick together.) The result is a book that can be easily read by your child and will help connect the sight of N to its sound.
I learned the sound of the letter N
When I was just a child
I'd be heading for the staircase
And my mother, she would go wild
She'd say "N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-NO
N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-NO
N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-NO"
And then she'd spell it -- N.O.
I'd reach for some sharp object
That was up upon the shelf
And Mom would make that N sound
She just could not help herself.
She'd say "N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-NO
N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-NO
N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-NO"
And then she'd spell it -- N.O.
Well, she must have loved that letter
'Cause she said it all the time
And she even named me Nathan
And sometimes she would whine
She'd say "N-N-N-N-N-N-Nathan NO
N-N-N-N-N-N-Nathan NO
N-N-N-N-N-N-Nathan NO"
And then she'd spell it -- N.O.
I've known the sound of the letter N
Since I was just a child
And I owe it all to my sweet mother
And the way that she would go wild
When she'd say "N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-NO
N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-NO
N-N-N-N-N-N-Nathan NO"
And then she'd spell it -- N.O.
