The Spirit of Lincoln
Sara Jordan Publishing

 Listen to this song.

This song is available on The Presidents' Rap.

Chorus:
The spirit of Abraham Lincoln
Lives in us today
The love he had for his fellow man
Showed America the way.

Our 16th President came from the West
From the state of Illinois.
In a small log cabin he was born
That's all he knew as a boy.

On the frontier there weren't many schools.
He walked so many miles
Just to borrow books so he could learn
And prepare him for his future trials.

Chorus

He went on a trip to New Orleans
Back in 1831.
It was there that he saw the misery
That slavery had begun.
He studied hard for many years;
A lawyer he became.
He did his legal work so well,
He was known as "Honest Abe".

Chorus

"A house divided against itself
Cannot stand."
Abe Lincoln ran for President
As he tried to unite the land.
But war broke out between the states
In 1861.
Both sides fought for four long years
With many battles lost and won.

Bridge:
Because of Lincoln's vision
Of a nation strong and free,
He proclaimed an end to slavery
Back in 1863.

Chorus

He gave a famous speech one day
That stood above the rest.
Those words still live in our memory
As the Gettysburg Address.
By 1865 the war was won,
But Lincoln never lived to see
The country reunited
In peace and harmony.

Bridge:
He was killed by a single bullet
From John Wilkes Booth's gun.
The nation mourned, both North and South,
For a great man's life was done.

Chorus
