Purim is a holiday that comes in early spring and celebrates the story of Queen Esther who saved the Jews from the evil Persian prime minister, Haman. The story of Esther is told in a book called the Megillah (which literally means scroll). The word Purim means lots because Haman “cast lots” to determine the date that the Jews would be destroyed. Esther was married to the King of Persia, King Ahashveros and when she told him of Haman’s evil plot, Haman was done away with instead. Purim is celebrated with parades, costumes, masks and lots of festivity. On Purim, we eat a jam filled, triangle shaped cookie called a hamantaschen. We also use noisemakers (groggers) to make noise whenever Haman’s name is read in the Megillah.
